Breast implant removal

Explantation of breast prostheses: What you need to know before you start.

The decision to have breast implants placed is often a well-considered one, which for many women adds to their self-confidence and body image. Yet there may come times when you consider having your breast implants removed, a process known as explantation.

Wanting to have breast implants removed (explantation) can have several reasons, ranging from personal preferences to health reasons. Whatever your motivation, it is important to know that safe breast implants, as used at reputable plastic surgeons and clinics, are safe, and that there is no direct evidence that silicone breast prostheses cause cancer.

Why do women consider explantation?

There are several reasons why women choose to have their breast implants removed:

  • Changes in your aesthetic preferences: As time passes, your preferences and body may change, so you may no longer feel comfortable with your implants.
  • Health issues: Although breast implants are generally safe, some women report symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, or skin rashes. These symptoms are sometimes attributed to ‘Breast Implant Disease’ (BII), although there is no scientific evidence that these symptoms are directly caused by the implants.
  • Concerns about possible health risks: Concerns about a possible link between breast implants and cancer, especially the rare Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), may make some women decide to remove their implants.
  • Change of size or brand: You wish to replace your breast implants with new breast implants, of a different brand, texture, shape or size.

Why don't I have to worry about cancer right away?

More than 10 million women worldwide have breast implants, and extensive studies have not shown that implants are directly linked to an increased risk of breast cancer or other cancers. Several major studies, including those by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health organisations, confirm that there is no conclusive evidence that breast implants cause cancer.

Are you still concerned and want to have your breast implants removed?

It is understandable that there are concerns about the safety of breast implants, especially given the media attention surrounding cases of BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma). However, it is important to stress that BIA-ALCL is very rare, and most of the scientific literature shows that the risk of developing this condition is extremely low. Moreover, BIA-ALCL is highly treatable when detected at an early stage.

Want to play it safe and still remove your breast implants? Then of course you can and you have come to the right place at Wellness Kliniek!
